After 35 years on television, At the Movies will be cancelled.
According to distributor Disney-ABC Domestic TV, "This was a very difficult decision, especially considering the program's rich history and iconic status within the entertainment industry, but from a business perspective it became clear this weekly, half-hour, broadcast syndication series was no longer sustainable." The show started as Sneak Previews, hosted by Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert in 1975. It became syndicated in 1982, and it lasted until Siskel died in 1999. The show was then renamed Ebert & Roeper when critic Richard Roeper took over Siskel's spot. In 2006, Ebert was forced to leave the show after surgery for thyroid surgery halted his ability to talk. Ben Lyons and Ben Mankiewicz took over, but that was a disaster. They were gone in less than a year and replaced by A.O. Scott and Michael Phillips. Rest in peace, At the Movies. In my book, you'll always be two thumbs up. |
