FLASHBACKS
Sun and Jin talking on their cellphones to one another back in Korea. They seem in love. Sun sits on a park bench. An older woman is reading a newspaper, and points out their wedding photo in the paper. Suddenly, it turns ugly, as the woman implies that it would be a disgrace if people learned that the daughter of the Paik Automotive fortune had married the son of a fisherman. The woman wants Sun to return in three days time with 100,000 dollars (or whatever). Sun is unpacking in a condo. She is looking at pictures. Jin walks in. She starts to show him the pictures, as her embraces her. She asks him about him not having pictures of his family. Jin says he has no pictures, because his father died while he was in the army. He gets defensive and says Sun must have misunderstood, because he earlier told her his father died when he was 16. Sun goes to Jin's family's fishing village. The father greats her warmly. They go inside to drink tea, and the father asks Sun about the wedding. Sun asks why he wasn't at the wedding. The father figures out Jin didn't want to mention the family, because he was ashamed of coming from a fishing village. Sun asks the father about his own lie about Jin's mother. The father says Jin's mother was with many men, but she left the child with him. He mentions that he wasn't even sure if Jin was his, but Jin had no one else. The father calls her beautiful, and asks her to keep their meeting a secret, as well as the secret about Jin's father, to keep him from further shame. Sun goes to her father to ask for blackmail money. She refuses to tell why. Sun mentions that she has always pretended to not know what he did for a living. She will continue to pretend, if he gives her the money. She implies the money is to save Jin shame. The father gets the money, but tells Sun that if this is for Jin's shame, Jin will owe the money. The father will move Jin off the "floor" and into the real business. Sun looking out the window of their condo. Jin comes in. They kiss. They have honeymoon banter. Suddenly, Jin finds the money. Sun sas it is ffrom her father. It is for their honeymoon. Jin says he will pay for everything, that he will always take care of her. Jin says he doesn't want to be in Sun's father's debt. Sun says she love him. Sun meets with the woman. Sun demands to know why the woman didn't mention she was Jin's mother. Sun hands the money over, then tells her that Jin thinks his mother is dead. Sun says that her family is powerful, so not to force her (Sun) to make that a reality. PRESENT ON THE ISLAND THE EPISODE BEGINS: Sun working in the jungle. She hears a sound. It's Jack. He asks her about her pregnancy. She says she's okay, but seems a little defensive. Jin, Charlie, Hurley and Desmond standing over the mysterious woman. Desmond claims he's never seen her before. She speaks Spanish and Hurley translates. She has a wound in her side from her fall into the branches. Charlie and Desmond argue about Desmond's plan to run for help (Jack). Charlie mentions there are other people on the island and it's dangerous. Suddenly, Hurley, who is looking through the woman's belongings, fires off a flare. He says, "Oops". Sun is asking Kate about Jack. Kate tells what Jack told her about his captivity. Sun suspects Jack may have been "turned". Kate tells Sun about Juliet's research, and Sun goes to confront Juliet. Sun wants answers. Juliet says pregnant women on the island die. "They die." Desmond and Charlie continue to argue. Desmond mentions the woman has a picture of him and Penny. Desmond pulls a flare gun dramatically. Suddenly, Bakunin runs through the jungle and seems confused when he runs upon the group. (Obviously, he saw the flare and thought it was a signal for him.) Bakunin takes off running. Jin takes off after him. Jin leaps and tackles him from behind. THe two fight dramatically. Bakunin grabs Jin by the throat and lifts him up. Jin uses a self-defense move and gets free. He grabs Bakunin from behind and starts to choke him out. (Cut to Desmond holding the flare gun to Bakunin) "...I have already died once this week," says Bakunin. The woman is speaking in Italian. Bakunin says he was a field medic in the Russian army. They let him look at the woman. Bakunin says her lung was punctured and, if it is not ventilated, it will fill with blood and she will die. He says he will help if they let him walk away as if they never saw him when he is finished. Juliet sneaks into Sun's tent. Juliet tells Sun to come with her and she will show Sun the truth about her pregnancy. Juliet and Sun walking through the jungle with torches. Juliet tells Sun she is looking for a medical station. She will determine the baby's date of conception. If Sun conceived on the island, she's in trouble. If not, everything's probably okay. Juliet asks when Sun and Jin last had sex. Sun doesn't want to tell her. Bakunin is performing surgery on the mysterious woman. She screams, then says something in Italian. Desmond wants to know what she said, and Bakunin says, "Thank you. Thank you for helping me." Sun and Juliet make it to the medical station. Sun asks Juliet why Juliet is helping her. Juliet says that once upon a time that "once upon a time" she told women they were pregnant, and the look on their face was so rewarding. Now, Juliet has lost nine women in the last three years. Juliet is helping so she can tell Sun and Jin that they will have a healthy baby. Sun says that she had sex with another man. She begins to say why she did and that it was "a mistake". Juliet says, "We all make mistakes". Then Juliet walks to the lockers and pulls a secret lever, opening a secret door. Sun asks why the room is hidden and Juliet says not to worry about it. Sun insist, and Juliet says it is where "they" brought the women to die. (Cut to commercial.) The woman is resting quietly. Bakunin is giving Desmond and the others medical advice. Bakunin readies to leave. Charlie disagrees. Jin suddenly runs after Bakunin. Desmond and the others run after him. Jin shows them Bakunin was trying to steal the phone. Charlie asks him, "You tried to steal our phone?" Bakunin: "How could you respect me if I didn't try?" Charlie: "What if I take your other eye? Would you respect that?" Bakunin taunts Charlie. Desmond intervenes. Charlie says, "We can't keep letting these people go." Desmond replies, "We gave him our word." Sun mentions that she and Jin tried to have a child in Korea. Jin was sterile. Juliet mentions that, on this island, male sperm counts are 5 times what they are off the island. Those are "good odds". (Aside: Will Kate get pregnant?) Sun mentions that she loses either way. If she lives, that means the baby isn't Jin's. Juliet is doing the ultrasound. She and Sun see the baby. They smile. It is too early to say whether it's a boy or girl. Juliet says the baby was conceived eight weeks ago, and they got here three months ago. So Sun conceived on the island. Sun cries, but because she is happy that it is Jin's baby. Sun and Juliet are outside of the medical station. Juliet says that some women didn't make it through their second trimester, and none made it through their third. Juliet goes back in to "clean up". They have a warm moment and Sun thanks her. Juliet picks up a recorder and gives the full scoop to Ben. She finishes with, "I hate you." (Off the tape.) The group make a stretcher. Charlie tells Desmond you can't trust the Others. Desmond says that "you've killed more of them than they have of you." (Jin tells Charlie to tie his knot tighter.) Hurley is talking into the phone. The woman asks who he is. Hurley says they were on Flight 815. The woman says that's impossible. Hurley starts to give her details. She says, no. "Flight 815...They found the plane. There were no survivors. They're all dead." Hurley: "What?" THE END NEXT WEEK: Charlie and Desmond argue about "telling Jack" or "trusting Jack". Locke breaks his truce with Ben. "I snuck into his tent and kidnapped him, and I want you," Locke says to Sawyer, "to kill him." |

FLASHBACKS:
Locke and Ben arguing about Locke's dad. Locke tries to un-gag him. Locke's father bites Locke's hand. Locke's father asks, "Don't you know where we are, John?" An Other locks the door. Ben wheels down the corridor, saying that's enough for now. Ben says they are leaving in the morning and he wants to know if Locke will come with them. Locke says, "Yes." Locke is out in a valley talking to a friendly Other woman. Someone informs him that Ben wants to talk to him. Locke hear's Ben listening to Juliet's report from last week. Ben mentions that he was unwell until John came among the Others, then he began to regain feeling in his extremities. Ben tells Locke he must kill his own father, to heal the psychological damage of the outside world. Ben hands Locke a knife and tells John to kill his father. Locke's father asks if that's who Ben wants to kill him, then calls John spineless. Ben tries to talk Locke into killing, while Locke's father seems to taunt Locke about not knowing what's going on. Locke grabs his father, while the father continues to mess with him. Locke presses the knife to his throat, but refuses to kill his father. Locke's father tells John, "I'll be here all week." Ben walks up and smashes the man with an axe handle (or something). Ben tells the assembled Others, "I'm sorry. He's not who I thought he was." THREE DAYS AGO. Locke sitting on a hill brooding. Richard shows up to "properly introduce" himself. Richard says Ben wanted to embarrass Locke by putting him in front of the group and show the Others that Locke wasn't that special. Richard says that when the Others heard that Locke had healed, they assumed he was special. But Ben doesn't want them believing in someone special. Richard suggests that Locke get a second person to do the dirty work. He drops the Sawyer file in his lap. YESTERDAY. Locke wakes up and sees Ben and the Others packing up. Ben tells Locke they are leaving, but he isn't going with them. They are also leaving Locke's father as "his mess". Ben tells Locke they will leave a trail for him to follow, but if he isn't carrying his father's body on his back, not to bother. PRESENT: Locke looking through files. A muffled voice is heard behind him. Locke tells the person to save their breath, that no one is going to hear them. He burns the file. Sawyer and Kate are on the beach at night. Kate wakes up after a booty call on Saywer's tent. She wants to sleep in her tent and leaves. Sawyer goes to take a leak and sees Hurley and Jin skulking around on the beach at night. Taking a leak, he hears something in the underbrush. A flashlight comes through the trees. Sawyer pulls his gun. It's Locke. Locke says, "Hello, James." Sawyer has a gun trained on Locke. He's wanting to know why Locke joined the Others. Locke says he infiltrated them. When questioned, Locke says he kidnapped Ben and brought him for Sawyer to kill Ben "for torturing Sawyer". Locke says he isn't a murderer, and Sawyer says he isn't, either. Locke tells Sawyer he saw the file about the man in Australia. Sawyer says their facts are wrong. Locke says he made a mistake and asks Sawyer not to tell anyone. He walks off. Sawyer says "damn" and trudges into the jungle after Locke. Charlie is quizzed by Jack about what he and Hurley are doing down the beach. Charlie dismisses it as male bonding and exploration. Jack says next time he would like to go. Hurley and Charlie talk about letting Jack in on the secret. Desmond says Jack spent 10 days in the Others' company and now he pals around with Juliet. The woman in the parachute is their way off the island and they could jeopardize it. Locke and Sawyer in the jungle. Locke is talking about Sawyer's parents and the murder-suicide. Sawyer jumps Locke from behind, demanding Locke stop calling him "James", holding a knife to Locke's throat and demanding to know why he sought out Sawyer. Locke says it's because he couldn't kill the guy, but Sawyer would. Sawyer said he wouldn't kill anybody, but he would go with Locke to bring the guy back to camp. Locke says Sawyer will change his mind when he "hears what he has to say". Sayid digging. Hurley walks up and asks if he can keep a secret. (CUT SCENE) Sayid walks up to Hurley, and seems to know the scoop. He asks if Jack knows and seems pleased when he isn't. They escort him in to talk to the woman. Inside, the woman says that the plane was found in an island trench and bodies were found along with it. She says she was on the island to find Desmond, that she was given coordinates but had no idea an island existed here. Sayid asks Desmond if they actually saw the plane, implying she is a spy. She produces a communication device and says to remind her not to rescue Sayid. Sawyer and Locke talk a bit about Locke's father and the murder. Sawyer says the murder was a mistake and wants John to give him a "heads up" on this guy. Locke says it isn't his place to do so. Sawyer and Locke come up to Locke's prison in the jungle (the old slaving ship). Sawyer asks "what's in the boxes" and Locke says it's dynamite. Sawyer enters a room where a man with a hood and gag sits tied up. Sawyer says, "Well, well, well." Then Locke locks Sawyer in the room with the hooded fellow. Sawyer tries to get out, then pulls the hood off the tied up guy. When he sees it is Locke's father, he asks, "Who the hell are you?" Sayid is fiddling with the communications device. Hurley asks, "Is that like a radio?" "Like a radio," replies Sayid. Kate shows up and asks if that's a radio. Hurley says he found it in the luggage. Sayid suggests he is going to tell Kate the truth. Sawyer is bangs on the door and demanding Locke open it. Locke sits calmly. Rousseau enters. Locke warns her about the dynamite. Sawyer threatens to shoot Locke. Locke has figured out Sawyer has no bullets. Locke's father suggests that he is Locke's father. Sawyer asks how he got here, and Locke's father says he was in a car wreck, a guy gave him an I.V. and smiled at him. The next thing he knows, he was facing his dead son. Locke's father suggests they are all in Hell, that the plane was reported down and everyone dead, just like him and his car wreck. When Sawyer asks why the man wanted to kill his own son, Locke's father mentions Locke was becoming troublesome, that he had conned Locke out of his kidney. Sawyer focuses on the "con", and asks the man what his name is. Locke's father says a con man goes by many names, and starts listing them off. The fourth of the names is Tom Sawyer. "Huck Finn was taken." Sawyer answers, "That's funny. My name is Sawyer, too." He gives Locke's father a menacing look. Locke's father asks why Sawyer is looking at him that way. Sawyer asks if he's ever been to Jasper, Alabama. "Yeah. Am I your daddy?" "No. You killed my father," Sawyer replies. Sawyer wants him to read his letter. He starts, but then starts to taunt Sawyer. Locke's father says he ran that con two dozen times and that Sawyer shouldn't blame him if his daddy overreacted and did the murder-suicide. Sawyer demands he finish the letter, so Locke's father tears it in half. In rage, Sawyer chokes Locke's father to death with the chains he is tied up to. Locke comes in the room, sees the dead body and says, "Thank you." Jack and Juliet sitting on the beach eating and chatting in a friendly manner. Kate wants to talk alone. Jack says that anything Kate can say, can be said in front of Juliet. Kate mentions that it's fitting, since no one will tell Jack because they don't trust him (because of Juliet). Kate mentions the woman in Hurley's tent and she has a communication device that can reach help 90 miles (or something like that) off the island. Sawyer is running into the wilderness, looking like he's sick to his stomach. Locke comes up. Sawyer asks why Locke did this, to which Locke replies that the man ruined both their lives and he deserved it. He also mentions that Juliet is a mole, that she was sent to learn about the pregnant women and there will be a raid in three days to take them. They claim they don't want to harm anyone, but that's not certain. Sawyer asks if Locke is going "back undercover". Locke says, "No, I was never undercover, James. I'm on my own journey now." When Sawyer says that no one will believe him, that he's already tried to alert everyone to Juliet, Sawyer says, "They will now." Locke produces a tape recorder with Juliet's message to Ben. He hands it to Sawyer. Sawyer asks if it's true, that "Hey, is it true? That he threw you out a window, that you're a cripple?" Locke replies, "Not anymore." He grabs his father's body (which is in a big cloth bag) and lifts it over his shoulder. NEXT WEEK: Locke brings the dead body back to the Others. He demands that Ben tell him everything about the island. Sawyer has the recorder which implicates Juliet. Ben is about to show Locke whats in the room (apparently). |

This was a top notch episode. Those of us who have read the speculation that Locke's father was the original Sawyer figured this episode was coming eventually. But the writers were able to keep us guessing as to what exactly would happen. It's rare to know what's coming, but still be kept in suspense.
I actually figured the writers would wimp out and have Sawyer refuse to kill the guy, then have the dynamite explode and kill the old guy or something. I applaud that they had Sawyer murder the man. It absolutely is what should have happened. I assume that Sawyer goes into a whole new phase of self-loathing. I'm sure he pushes Kate away and becomes a big heavy next week, especially with the Juliet revelation coming out. I'm sure Sawyer and Jack are headed for a showdown of sorts, next week. Locke's dad certainly played it to the hilt. You talk about an unrepentant criminal. He refused to give an inch at the end. The act worked wonderfully on Locke. When he tried it on Sawyer, he tried it on the wrong dude. Of course, he kind of has a point. Running a con is scummy, but Sawyer's father is the one who murder Sawyer's mother. Locke's dad/Tom Sawyer needed to die for trying to murder Locke, I guess, but he went down for the wrong crime. Now Locke goes on a quest of discovery. That leads him back to Ben--the man with the answers. Can't wait for the Ben spotlight episode next week. |

I'm going with the cheesy pick. I'm saying it's that Korean dude Sun was sleeping with before the island. I know that option is supposed to be off the table, but is it, really? We have nothing but Juliet's good faith to make us believe Sun conceived on the island. Juliet said she was tired of delivering the 9 dead babies, that she wanted to bring life into the world or something like that. Juliet might have lied simply to be part of bringing a baby into the world, knowing she is the expert on the "island babies". |

Ben's father wakes up and mentions it's Ben's birthday. He says it's hard to celebrate Ben's birthday, because it's the day Ben "killed his mother." They went for a walk when she was 7 months pregnant, and he came early, killing her. Ben runs out of the house. Young Ben shows up at the electromagnetic fence. He sees a vision of his mother. "Mom!" He goes to speak to his father, who looks much older. Ben mentions it's his birthday, but he shouldn't expect his father to remember it. His father tells him they should go out in the van and have some beers. (It's the van that Hurley and the gang got started earlier in the season. It's even playing the same song.) Ben asks if his father really blames him for his mother's death. Ben's father says that next year he'll try to remember Ben's birthday. Ben tells him not to worry about it, there will be no next year. Every since he can remember, he's had to put up with him (his father). That took a "tremendous amount of patience". Then Ben pulls out a gas mask and sets off a cannister, murdering his father. Walking back to camp in his gas mask, Ben sees people lying dead everywhere. Mr. Goodspeed is on a bench. Ben closes his eyes. People come out of the jungle in gas masks. Richard pulls off his gas mask. Richard asks Ben, "Do you want us to go get his body?" "No. Leave him up there." |

PRESENT:
Richard walks into Ben's tent. the two realize that Ben's tape recorder is missing. Ben goes to ask Tom about it. Suddenly, Locke walks up, carrying his father's corpse. He tells Ben, "You told me if I killed my father, you would tell me everything about the island. So why don't you start at the beginning?" Ben sitting in his tent, pouring liquor for Locke. Ben says he wishes it were as simple as dusting off a book, but it's not that simple. "We all answer to someone." Locke asks who that would be. Ben says, "Jacob." Ben mentions he was one of the last people born on the island, that he is one of the last people left, and that Jacob only talks to him. Locke calls Ben a liar and points out (as proof that he's right) that Ben's hand is shaking. Charlie and Claire walking down the beach with the baby. Sawyer hiding in the bushes. Sayid walking by, and Sawyer calls him over. They talk for a second about Locke, then Sawyer shows Sayid the tape recorder (shows, not plays it). Bakunin runs up to Ben's camp. Ben says he thought Bakunin was dead. Bakunin wants to know why Locke is there, the man who tried to kill him. Bakunin warns Ben about the woman parachuting in. Ben tells Bakunin they will deal with it in two days. Bakunin says they must deal with it now. Locke says that Ben is going to take him to meet Jacob, shocking everyone in the camp. Ben gives his bug-eyed look. Ben tells Locke that he is going to have to deal with this now. Bakunin asks Ben "since when do you have to explain yourself to this man?" Locke attacks Bakunin and knocks him into unconsciousness, drawing blood. "You know, you didn't have to beat Mikhael senseless to make your point, John," says Ben. Locke is washing himself in a stream. "Yes, I did." Ben's daughter walks up and hands him a pistol, because he's going to see Jacob. She tells him, "Happy Birthday." Locke gives him a look. Sayid and Sawyer are looking in Juliet's tent. Kate says Juliet is with Jack, that they left after Kate told Jack about Naomi. Sayid is mad she told them about Naomi, and Kate replies he should tell the others. Sayid walks off to confront Jack and Juliet, and turns to Sawyer, telling him to play the tape for Kate. Ben and Locke argue about Jacob. Ben says Jacob is real, but he will not be happy about their arrival. Ben says his hand was shaking because Jacob is not the kind of man you visit, but the kind "who summons you." Locke, who is peeling fruit with his knife, replies through a mouthful of fruit, "Well, I guess there's a first time for everything." Locke and Ben going through the jungle. It's night time. Ben leads. Locke grabs a handful of ash-like ground. He smells it, while Ben urges him to continue. Claire leads an argument about the whole world thinking they are dead. Sayid says that isn't important right now. Claire and Sun take exception to that fact. Naomi asks them if they want to be rescued. Sun argues with Sayid and Sawyer about Jack's trustworthiness and Juliet's character, when Sawyer plays the tape recording of Juliet. Jack demands to know where they got the tape. Sawyer says he's in no position to asks such questions. Juliet tells Sawyer to turn the tape over and play it. It is Ben, telling Juliet that they will take Kwan's baby. Juliet says that the night she made that tape, she told Jack everything. When asked about why Jack hadn't told anybody this, he said he hadn't decided what to do about it. Sawyer replies, "YOU hand't decided." Jack replies, "We have some catching up to do." Ben and Locke walking in the jungle. Ben says, "We're here." Ben tells Locke to turn off his flashlight, because Jacob feels "the same way about technology as you do." Ben steps inside and lights a lantern. Ben says, "Once I open this door, there's no turning back. Are you sure this is what you want? So be it." "Jacob. I'm here with John Locke. We're coming in now." Jacob is standing next to an empty chair. Ben tells Locke to say hello. Locke asks what's going on. Ben begins to talk to Jacob, while Locke says that Ben doesn't know anything about the island. Locke (going through his head) asks if Ben actually believes that Jacob is there. Then he decides Ben is pathetic. As Locke turns to walk out the door, Locke hears a man say, "Help me." Locke asks Ben what he just said. "I didn't say anything." "Oh, yes, you did," says Locke. Suddenly, everything gets crazy. It sounds like the smoke monster outside, or maybe something knocking on the walls. Both lanterns fall off of tables and start to burn. Ben grabs the Jacob's chair and says, "That's enough. You've had your fun." Ben walks outside all crazy-eyed. Locke asks, "What was that?" "That was Jacob," replies Ben. Ben and Locke in the jungle. It's the next day. "What did you hear in there, John? What did he say to you?" Locke implies that Ben is the one that said something. Locke calls it a show. Locke tells Ben that he needs to tell everyone that he's been lying to them. Ben admits that he's told some lies, such as the fact that he was born on this island. Locke points out they aren't going back the way they came. Ben says he wanted to show Locke something. Ben and Locke standing over a pit full of skeletons. "This is where I came from, John. These are my people: the Dharma Initiative. They came here seeking harmony, but they couldn't even coexist with the island's original inhabitants. When it became clear that one side had to go, one side had to be purged, I did what I had to do. I was one of the people that was smart enough to make sure that I didn't end up in that ditch...which makes me considerably smarter than you, John." Locke pulls his knife. Ben shoots him in the stomach or chest. Locke falls into the pit. Ben: "What did Jacob say to you?" Locke: "Why did you do this?" Ben: "Because you heard him." Locke says, "Help me." Ben misunderstands and asks again. Locke says, "He said, help me." "Well I sure hope he helps you, John." NEXT WEEK: Desmond tells Charlie that this time he has to die. The camp divides into two. Ben is seen. The Others are coming. It look like an all-out battle. |

Well, on the synopsis, it wouldn't let me put it in one post, so I had to cut it up into two. Hope that doesn't confuse anybody.
So Ben is little more than a cold-blooded murderer! There you have it. He grew up under the Dharma Initiative, then betrayed them to become a Hostile. I guess now we get to wonder for a year or two who the heck the Hostiles are. They are apparently the people who were on the island before the Dharma Initiative. The man in the wilderness who young Ben met looked like Richard. I don't know if it was the actor who played him, or someone meant to look like him. Certainly, it wasn't supposed to be Richard, because he was obviously years older than Ben, which Richard isn't. I'm guessing that Richard is an important Hostile. Locke is left for dead. Time for his Wolverine healing factor to kick in. I'm guessing Ben will regret not finishing Locke off. There are many questions posed by this episode. Is Ben just plain crazy? Did he fake Jacob's voice? Obviously, Locke was turned away when he heard Jacob's voice. Either way, some kind of crazy effect was going on in the room which Ben wasn't controlling, or at least I suppose he wasn't controlling. I'm guessing we're supposed to believe they are playing this straight, and Jacob exists as a disembodied voice with the ability to throw lanters off the table. I wonder what the fandom will think about all that. I guess they've bought the smoke monster, pre-cognitive abilities and strange healing powers, so I guess a ghost-like figure isn't so much stranger. A good episode. At least some stuff happened in it. We also got a preview making us believe that Charlie will die next week. Is it too much to ask? |
