Default PBS Fires Host for Inappropriate Behavior

Thank goodness they pulled her. I feel safer already. I love how the network thinks that the videos "may undermine her character's credibility with our audience." The show, of course, is aimed at 2 to 5 year olds. Yes, the very picky 2-5 market (who would be just as content to watch paint peel).

NEW YORK (July 25) - The PBS Kids Sprout network has fired the host of "The Good Night Show" after learning she had appeared in videos called "Technical Virgin."

The host, Melanie Martinez, had alerted network officials about one of the videos late last week and she was immediately taken off the air.

"PBS Kids Sprout has determined that the dialogue in this video is inappropriate for her role as a preschool program host and may undermine her character's credibility with our audience," said Sandy Wax, network president.

Airing for three hours each evening, "The Good Night Show" airs soothing stories and cartoons designed to get an audience of 2-to-5-year-olds ready for bed. Each night, Martinez guides a puppet character into dreamland. Martinez is a stage actress and mother of a toddler.

In the two "Technical Virgin" videos - made before she landed the children's show job - she spoofs PSAs about how young women can keep their virginity.

PBS Kids Sprout airs children's programming 24 hours a day and is seen in about 20 million of the nation's 110 million television homes. "The Good Night Show" has been temporarily replaced by cartoons while a search is conducted for a new host.

As if one child saw that and would have known the difference. Of course, the Republicans placed one of their own in control of PBS a couple of years ago. This doesn't surprise me one bit.

I saw today where there's a new head of PBS. She met with the five members of the FCC about an upcoming Ken Burns documentary about World War II. Apparently, the FCC could not assure her they would not levy "crippling" fines on PBS for airing the documentary.

Some of the soldiers interviewed use graphic curse words. The FCC has instituted a new crackdown on television indecency. God forbid that someone might portray war as indecent.

I mean, how graphic can they be? Did these old guys get together and invent some new curse word which is 10 times stronger than the "F" word? It's Ken Burns, for Christ's sake. He does documentaries. It's not like he's some nut trying to push the boundaries of television. Ask any old veteran about the war, and I'm sure you're likely to hear some cursing or racial slurs.

I myself had an elderly relative who fought in the campaign against the Japanese. When asked about it, he would launch into curse-filled tirades and say oh-so-politically-incorrect things about the Japanese.

But that's the FCC for you. Perhaps the most useless government organization in the United States.

I think they determined that Ken Burns' core audience were those picky 2 to 5 year olds. Particularly foul language might undermine those WWII veterans' credibility.
