Default Favorite Stand-Up Comics

Talk about your favorites over the years, or those you thought were overrated. What about their routines? Any part of it that you especially enjoyed?

1. Larry Miller (his Five Stages of Drinking routine was always a favorite)

2. Eddie Murphy (it's amazing how someone can go from a brilliant and edgy stand-up artist to starring in Pluto Nash. I guess that's what we call getting older and more responsible. Murphy's riffs on Chinese restaurants were comedy gold, as well as his dead-on impressions on people like Bill Cosby.)

1. Andrew Dice Clay - Yep, he was a profane pig, but I still loved his act. And despite what some may think, he was capable of working clean and still being funny (it just didn't pay as well).

2. Norm McDonald - Did a great Burt Reynolds impersonation and was the best Weekend Anchor in the history of SNL. It's a shame that he was never able to get a film career going. I think his act was just a little too dry for the general public.

Dave Chapelle - It's a shame that his show ended so suddenly. Here's hoping that he returns to sketch comedy sometime in the very near future.

Dennis Leary, I believe the title was No Cure for Cancer. It is old, but he just kills me.

Larry Miller has a recurring role on Boston Legal as Edwin Poole. (The "Poole" in "Crane, Poole, and Schmidt".) He's been terrific in every appearance.

I was lucky enough to see Chappelle a few times at the Improv before he got really famous. The guy was a scream, one of the funniest standups I've ever seen.

Bob Newhart did some great standup back in the 60's, and so did Woody Allen, actually. Woody Allen actually guest-hosted the Tonight Show fairly often way back when.

Richard Pryor was brilliant, and Eddie Murphy did some mighty fine standup back in the day too.

A few of my favorites are George Carlin (love his rant on language and seven words you can't say on TV), Lewis Black, Patton Oswalt, and Dane Cook. The one everyone thinks is funny and I just don't get it, Robin Williams. What's the deal? First, I can hardly understand what he's saying cause he's talking at 100 MPH up there. I just find his whole act stale and repetitive the way he runs around and looks like an idiot.

I agree about Robin Williams. Though his act was fresh and different when he first burst on the scene, it hasn't aged well. Seems like he would even annoy himself. Watching him on interviews just gives me tired head.

I guess at least he can turn it off as an actor.

I agree on Carlin. He's been funny as hell for well over 30 years.

Lewis Black is a good one, as well. That manic delivery of his is hilarious.

Speaking of manic, Robin Williams ceased to be fresh in the 80s. While some of his acting work has been good, his stand-up is very tired indeed.

I had never heard of Dane Cook before, but I'll have to be sure and check him out.
