Default Smokin' Aces - Cool or Crap?

Here's the plot:

Sleazy Las Vegas magician Buddy "Aces" Israel (Jeremy Piven) is a former member of one of the largest criminal organizations in the country. In exchange for safety provided by the FBI under the Witness Protection Program, he has just agreed to testify against his former employer, Mafia boss Primo Sparazza (Joseph Ruskin). When the news reaches Sparazza, he immediately offers up $1 million dollars to anyone that will bring him Buddy's heart.

As word spreads quickly, FBI director Stanley Locke (Andy Garcia) sends agents Richard Messner (Ryan Reynolds) and Donald Carruthers (Ray Liotta) to Lake Tahoe to secure the witness. At the same time, Buddy's lawyers hire bail bondsman Jack Dupree (Ben Affleck) and ex-cops Hollis Elmore (Martin Henderson) and "Pistol" Pete Deeks (Peter Berg) to bring Buddy back to Vegas.

With Sparazza's specialist on the case and a series of shadowy assassins also after him, Buddy has quickly become the most wanted man in the country. His last night out in the Tahoe casinos is about to be rudely interrupted as all the parties converge in one chaotic gathering of people that either want to protect him or eradicate him by any means necessary.

Sounds like this could be a badass film in the tradition of Tarantino or Guy Richie. Then again, there have been plenty of these clones over the years that sucked (anyone remember The Big Hit?). Which one will it be?

I thought the trailer looked cool. It made me want to see the movie. Looked like it had a sense of fun.

Sometimes, the people making the trailers seem more talented than the film makers. I hope this isn't one of those times.

Yeah, the trailer looked uber cool. And maybe we can check it out to see how Alicia Keys does in her movie debut.

If she can act as good as she can sing, get ready for an Oscar.

I saw it on dvd. It was ok, but not great. Glad I watched it, but not one I will probably ever see again. The one thing I did kind of like is this is one movie where you can say everybody dies and be pretty close to the truth.

I loved the pairing of Matthew Fox and Nestor Carbonell. It was just like watching Lost.
