From Academy Award winning filmmaker Mel Gibson comes 'Apocalypto': a heart stopping mythic action-adventure set against the turbulent end times of the once great Mayan civilization. When his idyllic existence is brutally disrupted by a violent invading force, a man is taken on a perilous journey to a world ruled by fear and oppression where a harrowing end awaits him. Through a twist of fate and spurred by the power of his love for his woman and his family he will make a desperate break to return home and to ultimately save his way of life.
Opens on December 8th. It will close on December 9th.

Can't wait to see how this one does. His controversy may actually bring in some additional viewers, but there's no way the subject will draw a big crowd. The Passion was a unique event, but it was also a one-time thing.

I read that Apocalypto was one of the bloodiest and goriest films ever made. This isn't necessarily an indicator that the movie is bad (or good), but it is odd to me that Gibson has now released 2 movies in a row where extreme violence and bloodiness are such a major aspect of the film.
Is it possible that the gore is an attempt to get an emotional reaction from the viewer, and if so, is it possible that Gibson doesn't have other tricks as a directory to get that emotional reaction?

Amazing. I was stunned when I saw that it was the number one movie. I would have never imagined that an American audience would flock to this film like they did.
Whether it's the violence or the controversy surrounding Gibson, I still can't imagine that people are seeing it for the historical benefits. Still, they may be learning something whether they intend to or not, and that's always a positive.

Awesome piece of work. Truly shows how brutal man can get. There's one thing I need to say before I leave for those who are complaining about this movie being excessively violent. They should either try to understand the meaning of 'Rated - R' before buying a ticket in the theatres or buy a lolly pop and hold mommy's little finger before entering the theatre to watch Pingu.
