A murder mystery brings together a private eye (Val Kilmer), a struggling actress (Michelle Monaghan), and a thief masquerading as an actor (Robert Downey Jr.). And it all takes place in the weird world of Hollywood, where nothing is as it appears to be.
Directed and written by Shane Black (Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout). 1. First of all, if you like funny dialogue, then this movie is for you. Just check out a few of the comedy nuggets from the film: Perry: Look up idiot in the dictionary. You know what you'll find? Harry: A picture of me? Perry: No! The definition of idiot. Which you fuc*ing are! Harry: Don't worry, I saw Lord of the Rings. I'm not going to end this 17 times. Harmony: Well, for starters, she's been fuc*ed more times than she's had a hot meal. Harry: Yeah, I heard about that. It was neck-and-neck and then she skipped lunch. Perry: Did you dad love you? Harry: Only when I dressed up like a beer bottle, how about you? Perry: Well, he used to beat me in morse code, so it's possible. 2. It's nice to see Val Kilmer get to use his excellent comedic timing again in a movie. Anyone who saw Top Secret or Real Genius knows what I'm talking about. 3. Robert Downey Jr. is great as Harry Lockhart. Whether he's losing body parts, getting shot at, or being verbally belittled by Gay Perry (Kilmer), Downey is in top form throughout. 4. The Russian Roulette scene is just plain laugh-out-loud funny. I won't give it away, but let's just say that things don't go as planned when Harry tries to re-create one of those tough cop scenes that he's witnessed in the movies. 5. Shane Black always had a way with the written word, and his script really shines. His directing technique is very solid, utilizing numerous tricks and techniques to keep things moving along with tongue planted firmly in cheek. 6. Michelle Monaghan was okay as Harmony Lane, but I couldn't shake the feeling that other actresses might have been able to do more with the role. 7. The film delights in taking standard movie cliches and turning them on their ear. When Harry confronts a sleazy guy at a party (who's undressing a passed-out girl), you think you know exactly what's going to happen. Guess again. 8. If you have dim-witted friends, don't expect them to like this movie. You've got to pay attention and the one-liners are fired off at a rapid pace. Lazy viewers will be completely lost. Let them watch a Rob Schneider movie (maybe the one where he acts like an idiot). 9. Tons of references to real-life movies and actors. From the "Native American Joe Pesci" to the "Punk Rock Steven Seagal", Kiss Kiss Bang Bang lampoons anyone and everyone. 10. Great ending. Once again, it takes your expectations and throws them right out the window. Look for a cameo by Abraham Lincoln. |
