Audition
Just saw this Japanese horror film the other day. It's a 1999 film directed by Takashi Miike based on a Ryu Murakami novel of the same title, starring Ryo Ishibashi and Eihi Shiina.
A widower (who lives with his teenage son) decides that it's time to start looking for a new wife. A friend in the movie business sets up an audition for a film role, but the audition is actually to help the main character select a new wife. Numerous lovely young women try out and he's supposed to pick the one he likes best and pursue her as his bride.
Of course, the one he falls for turns out to be a little different. For example, she sits unmoving in her tiny apartment for several days waiting for him to call. Then there's the fact that everyone from her past seems to be dead or vanished. And then there's that big burlap bag in the center of her apartment...the one that twitches and moans from time to time.
The final twenty minutes are particularly gruesome, and reportedly made horror veterans like John Landis and Rob Zombie squirm in their seats.
If you're a fan of Asian cinema, especially the more frightening variety, you might want to give this one a look.
