Default 10 Thoughts - 16 Blocks

An aging cop (Bruce Willis) is assigned the ordinary task of escorting a fast-talking witness (Mos Def) from police custody to a courthouse. There are, however, forces at work trying to stop them from making it.

1. The voice Mos Def uses in this movie takes a bit of getting used to. It reminded me of one his characters from his frequent guest appearances on Chappelle's Show.

2. Willis certainly plays against type. Instead of the capable John McClain from Die Hard, we get Jack Mosley, a broken-down alcoholic with a bum leg.

3. David Morse (Contact, The Getaway) makes for a solid antagonist. He has an uncomplicated style of delivery which works well in this film. His character, Frank Nugent, is a man driven simply by necessity.

4. Thank God that they didn't decide to use the alternate ending to the movie (available for viewing on the DVD).

5. Director Richard Donner (of Lethal Weapon fame) keeps the movie moving along at a brisk pace. We get some decent character development, but these moments are usually punctuated by action sequences.

6. The movie is all about assumptions and how they can be wrong. Throughout the film, we learn info about the characters which challenge our preconceived notions. Even as the movie seems to be winding down, we're still treated to a few such twists and turns.

7. Mos Def is slowly building up a nice body of work. If you have a chance, you should check him out in the HBO original movie, Something the Lord Made (also starring Willis co-star, Alan Rickman).

8. There are parts of the movie where a bit more explanation would have been helpful. Sometimes, the audience is left a little short on the facts (although it could be argued that this helps the filmmakers achieve #6).

9. The riddle posed by Eddie Bunker (Def) in the movie is a good one. Use it on all your friends.

10. This movie must have tanked at the box office. I don't think I'd heard of it until I saw the DVD cover. While it may not be an instant classic, it's a nice little rental and probably deserved a better showing.

I like most of the stuff Bruce Willis has done, but haven't got to see this one yet. In your opinion, is it a rent or a buy?

It's no Die Hard, but I'd say it's a solid rental.

If you do decide to watch it, Pokermonger, I hope you enjoy it.

It's not Die Hard, but that's not necessarily a bad thing either.

Sounds like a renter to me. There are few movies I want to watch over and over.

Since you mention it, MacGuffin, which movies are you inclined to watch over and over?
