Default 10 Thoughts - The Devils Rejects

Sequel to 'House of 1000 Corpses' is set some months later with the Texas State Police making a full-scale attack against the murderous Firefly family residence for the 1,000+ murders and disappearances of the past several years. But three of the family members escape, including Otis, Baby Firefly and Baby's father, Captain Spaulding. The evil trio go on a road trip, leaving dozens of mangled bodies in their wake. Evading a massive Texas Rangers dragnet, as well as a group of equally murderous bounty hunters led by Sheriff Wydell (whose brother was murdered by the Firefly clan in House of 1000 Corpses), who's obsessed with finding the deadly killers, the surviving Firefly clan gather at a run-down amusement park owned by Captain Spaulding's half-brother, Charlie Altamont. Meanwhile, Sheriff Dwyer, the Texas Rangers, the FBI, and others slowly close in.

1. Great soundtrack! If you like 70's rock, this one is for you.

2. If you like your movies with heaping helpings of the F-word, then you won't go away disappointed.

3. On the DVD, check out the deleted scene with Rosario Dawson. Not only is she lookin' hot in a nurses outfit, but we also get to see the return of Dr. Satan.

4. I loved seeing Dallas Page (who's apparently dropped the "Diamond") and Danny Trejo as a pair of badass bounty hunters.

5. The idea of making the Firefly family the default protagonists of the movie was interesting (if, indeed, the movie really has anyone who could be considered a protagonist). The script does a nice job of giving them enough humanizing moments to balance out the scenes where they behave like monsters. Take a look at the Tooty Fuc*in' Fruity scene and you'll understand what I mean.

6. People who are squeamish may very well turn off the DVD or walk out during the scenes between Otis, Baby, and the traveling musicians known as Banjo and Sullivan.
While retaining a certain lurid fascination, the scenes do seem to go on too long. We just watch them get tortured for 15 minutes without any real point.

7. Ken Foree (Dawn of the Dead) did a nice job as Charlie Altamont. Where's he been all these years?

8. Captain Spaulding's dream sequence is a hilarious way to introduce the character. It's also a nice way to work former porn star Ginger Lynn into the movie (who did her scenes with a badly blown-out knee).

9. Leslie Easterbrook (Mother Firefly) really hams it up in this film. I know things are supposed to be campy, but give me a break.

10. The script really helps the movie at times, and it gives performers like Ginger Lynn, Geoffrey Lewis, and Michael Berryman decent dialogue to work with. It's amazing how a few well-crafted bits of dialogue can help an actor put things together.

I'm with you 100% on this one. The Devils Rejects did something that's becoming increasingly important in my film-watching life; it surprised me. It was original. I didn't know what was going to happen in the next scene. And I didn't expect the "villains" to be the protagonists.

I liked House of 1000 Corpses, but it's amazing to me that such a dramatically different movie is actually the sequel. Especially in a day and age when almost all sequels are more or less remakes of the original film. The Firefly family are clearly evil in both movies, but they somehow attain a weird nobility or sympathy from the audience in Rejects that they just didn't have in House.

I liked The Devils Rejects so much that I watched it again the next day. I can't wait to see it on my new home theater system, because that 70's rock is going to sound great on my new Infinity speakers.

**POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING**

Don't read any further if you haven't seen this movie and want no clue as to how the movie ends. That being said...

The final scene was strangely poignant.

My hope is they don't turn this into a trilogy. I could see a "creative" writer finding a way to have the Firefly family "make it through" the roadblock, shot up and needing medical attention, but still alive.

That would be cheesy, and render the final scene of the movie cheesy.
