Plot Outline: Ranch hand Pete Perkins (Tommy Lee Jones) looks to fulfill the promise to his recently deceased best friend by burying him in his hometown in Mexico. Mike Norton (Barry Pepper) is a crude border patrol officer who is attempting to adjust to life in the small Texas town with his young wife (January Jones).
Thought #1-Jones' trek to bury his best friend reminded me very much of Lonesome Dove. Thought #2- While I like Barry Pepper as an actor, he seemed a little overmatched in his scenes with Tommy Lee Jones. Of course, the minimalist script didn't give him much to work with. Thought #3- It remains to be seen how much acting talent she has, but January Jones is smokin' hot (which makes sense, since she used to be a professional model). Thought #4- There's a nude scene with an out-of-shape older woman. You don't see those too often (and for good reason). Thought #5- I love Tommy Lee Jones, but his grizzled, stoic, Texan act is starting to wear a little thin. I'd like to see him in something that requires him to do more than scowl for 120 minutes. Thought #6- Dwight Yoakam plays the local sheriff. Man, I can't get enough of Dwight Yoakam (I still think he should have received an Oscar nomination for Slingblade). Thought #7- The early part of the movie is told out of order and could be confusing to some. Hell, it threw me off a little bit at first. Thought #8- Levon Helm does a nice job as Old Man with Radio. His scene is particularly touching and seems authentic. Look for him as the old blind man later in the movie. Thought #9- There are a couple of coincidences in the movie that strain its credibility. Chief among them is Norton's meeting with a woman who he assaulted earlier in the film. That was stretching it a bit. Thought #10- Tommy Lee Jones did a nice job as director. The movie slowly unfolds, not in any rush to tell its story. However, if that's not the type of film you like, then stay far away from this one. Also, a lot of it is subtitled, so stay away if that is a problem. |

I like Dwight Yoakam a lot too. This sounds like a movie I should probably take a look at.
BTW, Tommy Lee Jones was great in A Prairie Home Compaion. It was a small role for him, but he was very good. He managed to play the bad guy, but was still sympathetic. |
