The Brave One” is a drama directed by Neil Jordan and stars Jodie Foster and Terrence Howard.

The plot: A New York woman, a radio show host Erica Bain (Jodie Foster), was brutally beaten and her fiancé, David (Naveen Andrews), killed when they took a walk in the park late at evening. She goes on killing spree for revenge. The City of New York is fascinated with the exploits of this vigilante killer, and NYPD Detective Mercer (Terrence Howard) is trying to catch this person, before he kills again.

Jodie Foster plays a radio show host with her own program called “Walking the city” where she reads her essays: a female Garrison Keillor. No care in the world, about to get married. Then everything is changed one night. The boyfriend is dead and she barely survived. Foster’s character goes through all sorts of stages trying to deal with her experience, from paranoia and different phobias to rage to finally illegally buying a gun. Then she commits her first murder and tries to deal with that. Then another. Basically for most of the movie she deals with the past that transformed her into a different person. As she is taking her revenge she’s figuring out if she has the right to do it and we see how society reacts to it.

The good: Jodie Foster and Terrence Howard are amazing dramatic actors. Story is likable, with constant suspense and thrill of waiting to see what happens and if she ever will be caught. It’s also just fascinating to see what goes through the head of the person who was violated and becomes a killer and how she deals with the past and her actions in the present and rationalize her feelings. Her hand never trembled when she could rationalize the killings - some as self defense, some she felt righteous about and were executions. Also interesting how she decided to get the pistol in the first place and how much more powerful and invincible she felt with the gun in her hand. Jodie Foster was nominated for a Golden Globe in Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture category. She is also one of the producers.

The bad: The music is annoying. That show Erica had where she read her city stories was ridiculously boring. This movie is too similar to movies like 1990 “Darkman” in that **spoiler** she turns into a different person forever. I understand the revenge part of her actions, but I also didn’t like that she almost began to think that she can only get respect if she shows her gun. Many parts of the plot were too predictable. Also, many of her flashbacks were almost like from some superman movie, Catwoman or something - a cliché.

The summary: a pretty interesting thriller with good acting.
