Captain Milkshake, often remembered for it's stand against the Vietnam War and vivid exploration of the 1960's hippie lifestyle, is essentially about love, tolerance, and freedom, both individually and collectively. The theme of the work is brought out perfectly through the telling of a story about a young Marine on leave to San Diego who upon arrival home, meets a beautiful young hippie and allows her to take him into her world for a while. The two proceed to fall in love despite opposing views on life, politics, and society. The film does an amazing job of portraying love between these two polar opposites, proving the underlying theme that keeping an open mind is imperative to true happiness and freedom. Captain Milkshake, although definitely a statement of opposition to the Vietnam War, somehow manages to still give vulnerability and even a sense of credibility to the those in favor of the war by allowing the viewer to see things not only through the young hippie's eyes, but through the young Marine's as well. The ability to remain open to new ideas while at the same time keeping a solid foundation for one's own values and beliefs is a message that is conveyed very clearly in this particular film. It is filmmaking at its best, the perfect mix of love, politics, social issues, and pure entertainment. This film is a must-see!!!!
