Personally, I think Downey deserves this.
Just look at some of the roles he has entertained us with over the years: Back to School Soapdish Natural Born Killers Richard III Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Less Than Zero He's demonstrated a wide range of talent, from the comedic to the dramatic. He's 41 years old, but is on great shape and could pass for being in his 30s. And despite all his off-screen problems, he has never given up and just kept plugging away. I'm happy that he's going to get a chance to headline a big-budget action film, and I have no doubt that he'll be able to pull it off. Plus, I think he'll do a great job as the suave Tony Stark.

Downey is possibly the best actor of his generation. I feel bad for him and the people close to him because of all the personal problems he's had to deal with through the years, but it does seem like he's made it past that. He'll bring a maturity and intensity to this role that will make it interesting. I think it would be great if Stark were an alcoholic in the film, but I think I read that it wasn't so?

Yeah, the first film won't delve into his alcoholism. The second might.
Rumor abound that Famke Janssen aka Jean Grey has been cast as the female lead. And if this turns out to be true, I'm definitely anticipating this!

Looks like it's not Famke Janssen but Gwyneth Paltrow who's gonna be Virginia "Pepper" Potts. I sincerely hope this one will not turn out to be another Hulk...

Jeff Bridges has joined the cast of the superhero film "Iron Man," the first feature film to be produced independently by Marvel Entertainment.
Robert Downey Jr. stars as armor-clad superhero Iron Man and his alter ego, billionaire industrialist Tony Stark. Bridges will portray a confidant and close business associate of Stark, a longtime employee at defense contractor Stark Industries who plays a major role in shaping Stark's life. "We've been talking to Jeff for long time," Marvel's president of production, Kevin Feige, said. "There are many facets to this character which I can't discuss, but looking at the spectrum of all of Jeff's roles, this fits in nicely with the man who played 'Starman,' 'Tucker,' 'Big Lebowski,' with a little bit of 'Tron' thrown in."

Looks like Samuel L. Jackson will be playing Nick Fury (a step up from David Hasselhoff). Makes sense, since the Ultimate Marvel version of the character was patterned after Jackson.
