Default Death Race - Remake of the Corman Classic

English actor Jason Statham , who most recently starred in the action movie "Crank," is in talks to star in the futuristic thriller "Death Race."

The Universal Pictures project is a remake of Roger Corman's 1975 cult classic "Death Race 2000," which starredDavid Carradine and Sylvester Stallone . It was set in a dystopian America in which the president presides over an ultraviolent road race from New York to Los Angeles. One of the ways that drivers score points is by mowing down innocent bystanders using their heavily armed cars.

Sci-fi specialist Paul W.S. Anderson ("AVP: Alien vs. Predator") is writing and directing the remake. A late summer/early fall start is being eyed.

"Race" originally was set up at Paramount as a vehicle for Tom Cruise . The project was among those deep-sixed after Cruise's deal at the studio was terminated last year. Cruise and his production partner, Paula Wagner, will produce.

The original starred:

David Carradine
Mary Woronov
Sylvester Stallone

For a low-buget film, this one was a lot of fun. Besides, you can't beat a movie where the main character is named Frankenstein, and the movie has nothing to do with the Mary Shelley story.

The original is a must-see if you like sci-fi/fantasy movies. It's very tongue and cheek, but there's also plenty of good old-fashioned violence. And if you ever wondered who would win in a fistfight between David Carradine and Sylvester Stallone, well here's your chance to find out!
I especially liked Mary Woronov as the cowgirl. She was great. All the female leads also get naked, so all you guys should like that.

I hold little hope for this one. It's getting awful reviews. I hate it when they try to remake a movie but then ditch the original storyline in an effort to "improve" the film.

On the other hand, Death Race is bound to be better than "The Rocker".
