Default The Spirit

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - More than four decades after Will Eisner created him, "The Spirit" -- one of the most influential comics of all time -- is coming to the big screen.

The movie will be adapted and directed by Frank Miller ("Sin City"), who will be on hand for the public announcement Saturday at Comic-Con International in San Diego.

Unlike most comic book heroes, the Spirit (real name: Denny Colt) is not endowed with special powers or wealth. He is a regular guy who is thought to have been killed by an archvillain's experiments but instead returns to fight evil from his secret lair in a cemetery.

Production is slated to begin in about a year. Miller already is working on a draft but must first finish "Sin City 2," said Deborah Del Prete, whose Odd Lot Entertainment banner will co-finance and produce "The Spirit."

Eisner's "Spirit" comics deals with The Spirit, a masked crime fighter who faked his death in order to fight crime. His chief villain is the Octopus. Eisner was one of the first comic artists to eschew working for Marvel or DC in order to retain creative rights to his comics. He's also credited as inventing the graphic novel. Basically, he was doing what Frank Miller did like twenty years before he did.

Says Miller: '"Will was a dear friend, a mentor, and translating his vision to the screen will be a labor of love."'

Eva Mendes has joined the cast of Frank Miller's adaptation of Will Eisner's creation The Spirit. The cast already includes Gabriel Macht as The Spirit (a cop who fakes his own death to fight crime from the shadows), Samuel L. Jackson as evil mastermind the Octopus, and Scarlett Johansson as Silk N. Floss. Hollywood Reporter reports that Mendes has been recruited to play Sand Saref "a beauty with dangerous curves."

Now that's a great freakin' cast!

QFT. Frank Miller has just lost his mind, imo.
