Made in 1939, this classic film is the story of a young girl named Dorothy and her dog, Toto. As they wander through the fantastical land of Oz, they meet a Tin Man, Scarecrow, and a Cowardly Lion. And all the while they are menaced by the Wicked Witch of the West.

I remember seeing this on TV as a little girl and always loving it. What a trippy fantasy world they created. Loved them all, but the Scarecrow was my favorite.
I really surprised that they haven't tried to make a big-budget remake in the last few years. |

Speaking of trippy, has anyone ever watched this movie while listening to Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" album? I'm showing you how old I am now, but when I was a young man, the urban legend was that the movie and album were amazingly synchronized. You started the album as the MGM Lion roared the third time at the beginning of the movie. Of course, it was the unspoken rule that you should probably be smoking something, so that probably had a lot to do with the effect. Lots of bright colors in that Oz movie.

I think everything seems to sync up when you're stoned.

Me father told me scarecrows never frightened no bird, an' e says the one froom the film is of the worst sort, bein' a feller who in general 'as no sort of back bone whatsoever, and 'avin' to be, like, 'eld up by a crucifix as it were. Infact, me father 'ad a farm in the old day, an' the birds got to it. E blames all upon the idle scarecrow that still's up there.

I find "The Wizard Of Oz" a bit sickly. There's so much colour in it. I like the black and white sequences, though, and the bit where the busy-body woman's cycling in the sky's frightening to watch as a child.

You're right about the cycling scene, Gina. I also remember those flying monkeys really freaking me out as a child. |
