Default The Graduate Discussion Thread

Discuss it here.

The Graduate is a 1967 film directed by Mike Nichols based on the novel of the same name by Charles Webb. The screenplay is by Calder Willingham and Buck Henry. The film tells the story of Benjamin Braddock (played by Dustin Hoffman), a recent college graduate with no well-defined aim in life, who is seduced by Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft) and then falls in love with her daughter Elaine (Katharine Ross).

I was like, opposed to the idear of old Mrs. Robinson cheatin' on 'er husband. When did e ever do 'er any harm or treat her contrarily? Aren't we young people supposed to couple with young, and the old supposed to couple with old? When I'm old 'n gray, I don't want to be worryin' about the kid next door kickin' his football in me yard an' hittin' it off with me old lady, right?

Dustin Hoffman's funny in this one. He was playing a twenty one year old when he was actually thirty odd in reality. Bit of an Alan Ruck age-leap.

It should be added to the dictionary - "pulling off a Ruck" (acting term: playing a character at least ten years younger than your own age).
