Default What Celebrities Have You Met?

Here's a chance to share your stories about your brush with greatness. Who was it? Where did the encounter take place? Were they nice, or did they act like a jerk?

MacGuffin, I guess you owe us a Jimmy Caan story.

Okay, I'll be brief.

Sometime around 1985, I'm in New York City with my fiance at the time. We get back to the hotel around 2 or 2:30 in the morning, and there is James Caan with his (for lack of a better word) entourage.

This is during the time he had left acting for several years, trying to beat his substance abuse problems.

Anyway, there is Caan, his handler and a twelve year old boy. The boy complains of being hungry. The handler, carrying some kind of handbag, pulls out a sandwich, and proceeds to hand it to the child. Caan becomes angry at the handler, and grabs the man by his lapels.

"I didn't tell you to give him a sandwich. I didn't eat sandwiches when I was his age. I ate rats."

The handler proceeded to walk out with the child, telling Caan he was his butler, not his slave.

Then Caan turned back to myself, my fiance and the man at the front desk of the hotel and mumbled something that sounded like, "Alfred never acted this way before. I'm really starting to hate this kid."

He was dishevelled, with several days of stubble. The car he drove was something out of science fiction. It was a disgraceful scene.

But I did meet Bette Midler once, at one of my seminars. She was delightful.

I met Jami Deadly at the horror convention in Dallas last year. She was very polite, and quite lovely.

I met George Wendt in a bar in New York City, but we didn't really talk much, just said hi to him, and he said hi back to me.

I met Jimmy Carter at a book signing but was in such awe of his greatness that I couldn't think of anything to say to him.

I spoke with Wil Wheaton on the phone. Incredibly nice guy. Smart too.

I got to see Derek Jacobi speak a few years ago, and he was brilliant. I didn't get to meet him though.

I met George Bush in Austin when he was still the governor. He was pulling up in his limo to go to work at about the time we were getting a good look at the capitol building.

I almost forgot. I had breakfast with Minneapolis Jim Meehan, the poker player, when I was in Vegas last year. A lot of fun, he was, and a great storyteller.

I saw Sid Haig in a public restroom at a convention once. He seemed like a nice guy.

This is perhaps the oddest story that I have ever heard.

I think Maguffin might be mocking the new All Star Batman and Robin comic book a little bit here. He got me with it too until he mentioned Alfred.
